Marshall approved as replacement

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has approved New Zealand's application to replace injured batsman Lou Vincent with Hamish Marshall for the remainder of the Cricket World Cup.

Marshall will now take his place in the side after Vincent suffered a broken left lower ulna (wrist) earlier in the week when he was on the receiving end of a particularly lethal Shane Bond delivery during a recent team net session.

Despite reports that someone had been arrested in relation to the Bob Woolmer murder Jamaican police say theres is no truth in the reports. "I don't know where that's come from. That's nonsense, as far as I'm concerned. There's actually no truth in that." said deputy commissioner Mark Shield.

"I can unequivocally dismiss that, unless someone's given themselves up in India and we don't know about it, but I think that's highly unlikely."

However, its been reveleaed that there were no signs of forced entry into the Pakistan coach's hotel room "That's one of the interesting facts of the case. There's no sign of any forced entry at all," Shields said.

"In fact, all of Bob's possessions, as far as we can see, were intact."

Shields said it was therefore "difficult to believe" Woolmer's killer or killers were complete strangers to him.

He said: "It's imperative that we keep an open mind, but I have to say at this stage it looks as if it may be somebody somehow linked to him because clearly he let somebody into his hotel room and it may be that he knew who that person was."

Shield also went on to say “It would take some force because Bob was a large man and, therefore, it would have taken some significant force to subdue him.”

He added: “We do not know how many people there were in the room.”

Woolmer death now being treated as 'suspicious'

Jamaica's deputy police commissioner Mark Shields has revealed the death of Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer is now being treated as 'suspicious'.

Shields released a statement which said:

"At the press conference earlier today we reported that the cause of death was inconclusive.

"Having met with the pathologist, other medical personnel and investigators there is now sufficient information to continue a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr Woolmer, which we are now treating as suspicious.

"We have already informed the Woolmer family of this development and we are also in close contact with the Pakistan team management, Cricket World Cup and ICC to ensure all parties are kept informed of the ongoing investigation."

Flintoff dropped as England vice-captain

England's Andrew Flintoff was sacked as World Cup vice-captain and dropped for their Group C game against Canada this morning after a late-night drinking session in St Lucia.

However, team management decided against sending the 29-year-old all-rounder home after the incident on Friday night following their six-wicket defeat by New Zealand.

British newspapers had reported that Flintoff had to be fished out of the sea after capsizing a pedal boat in the sea following a drinking session.

A statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said five other players had also been fined for breaching discipline.

It added that this was not the first time that Flintoff, considered one of the world's greatest all-rounders and a key figure in their famous 2005 Ashes win over Australia, had been involved in such an episode.

"Andrew Flintoff has been given warnings about his conduct and disciplined for previous incidents of this nature," England head coach Duncan Fletcher was quoted as saying in the statement.

"In light of this and due to the serious nature of the incident which he was involved in at the hotel on Friday night, we have decided to take further disciplinary action against him.

"Andrew has been made fully aware of the team management's concerns and the fact that the ECB considers this type of behaviour to be totally unacceptable.

"He will remain with the World Cup squad and be available for selection for our next match against Kenya.

"All players involved wish to express their sincere regret for the embarrassment caused to their team mates, the England supporters and the ECB."

Pakistan coach dies

Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer - a former England Test batsman - has died after being found unconscious in his hotel room in the West Indies.

The 58-year-old was discovered in his room at the Pegasus Hotel in Sabina Park on Sunday morning, and was immediately taken to the emergency department of a nearby hospital - but he did not recover.

A team spokesman said: "We saw him on Saturday night but having not seen him early on Sunday two of our officers went to his room and with the help of hotel staff entered. He was found unconscious there. It is too early to say whether he has suffered a heart attack. We are awaiting medical reports."

Gibbs day out

Herschelle Gibbs has bagged an international cricket first by hitting six sixes in an over as South Africa inflicted a 221-run defeat on Holland at the World Cup.

Gibbs savaged Daan van Bunge to help his team charge to a South African World Cup-record 3-353 at Warner Park, and Holland could respond with only 9-132 in the Group A match reduced to 40 overs each because of rain.

Lara satisfied with win

Here's what Brian Lara had to say following the West Indies opening World Cup win against Pakistan.

On the efforts of the team's young players:
"I think it was important they seized the moment. We said this was not a World Cup for the experienced players and we would be tapping on the shoulders of the younger players to win this World Cup."

On how well the side played:
"I think we played pretty well in the batting department. Marlon (Samuels) put us back in the game and Dwayne (Smith) at the end in his partnership with Corey (Collymore). We're happy with that."

"I was satisfied after the start we had and thought the guys played really well in the last 10 overs."

"The bowling was a very good team effort. We used just five bowlers and they all did very well."

And in regards to support from the home crowd:
"It was great to have the support we had (from the crowd) and our confidence will now be sky-high. We may have to come down a few levels over the next few days."

Bangladesh smash Scots

Bangladesh needed just 34.1 overs to reel in Scotland's modest total of 152 on Thursday.

Navdeep Poonia was Scotland's best, posting a respectable 32 from 34 balls faced but he did it alone with the rest of the Scottish bats failing to fire. The Scots lost nine wickets as they crawled to 152 from their full allotment.

Abdur Razzak was the best of the Bangladeshi bowlers with 3/25 from 10 overs.

Ireland, Zimbabwe notch up wins

Ireland has accounted for Canada, getting home by 7 wickets in their World Cup warm-up match at St Augustine's Sir Frank Worrell ground. Set 116 runs for victory, Ireland got to its target with seven wickets and more than 23 overs to spare, with opener Jeremy Bray hitting an unbeaten 41.

Meanwhile Zimbabwe was too strong for Bermuda in their warm up in St Vincent, defeating them by six wickets with 21 overs to spare. Bermuda, did however, improve on their 45 run total they set against England, chalking up a total of 136. It wasn't enough to hold off Zimbabwe though, who were inspired by an unbeaten 72 from Sean Williams.

Gillespie in doubt for World Cup opener

New Zealand bowler Mark Gillespie is doubtful for the start of the World Cup after complications to a viral infection were diagnosed in Barbados.

Gillespie left New Zealand with a throat virus, which has since caused acute brachial neuritis of the nerves in his right shoulder.

The Wellington paceman is treating the ailment and will return to the specialist in Bridgetown on Friday, adding to the Blackcaps' worries after a pre-tournament defeat to Bangladesh.

A two-wicket loss at the 3Ws Oval has proven to be a 'wake-up call', according to captain Stephen Fleming.

"There's not a lot we can say, I guess it's a result that just shakes you up," said Fleming.

"We just didn't play well, I don't want to give any excuses. It gives us some headaches and I suppose you can say it's a wake-up call before the tournament starts."

"The only other positive for us is that this wasn't a pool match but it shows how tough this tournament can be."

New Zealand faces Sri Lanka in Bridgetown on Friday.

Australia home safely against Zimbabwe

Australia has defeated Zimbabwe by 106 runs in Kingstown to record its first one-day win in over a month. Australia batted first and made a total of 290 thanks to half-centuries from Michael Clarke (82) and Shane Watson (81). Zimbabwe saw out the full 50 overs in reply, however they fell well short, finishing on 7-184. Stuart Clark was the best of the Australian bowlers with 2/33.

Bangladesh cause upset over New Zealand

Bangladesh has caused the first upset of the World Cup by chasing down New Zealand's total of 224 with an over to spare in their World Cup warm-up at Barbados. Key bowlers for Bangladesh were Mashrafe Mortaza who took 4-44 and Abdur Razzak who snagged 4-26.

Sri Lanka home confortably against Scotland

Sri Lanka has downed Scotland by 162 runs in their warm-up match at the 3W's oval. Sri Lanka finished on 7/294 after half-centuries from Kumar Sangakkara (81), Sanath Jayasuriya (77) and Upul Tharanga (70). Scotland was no match however, finishing all out for 132 off 41.2 overs.

Ireland give South Africa a scare

Ireland has almost caused a huge upset over South Africa in their warm up match. The Proteas set the Irishmen a modest total of 193 for victory and Ireland appeared to have the win in the bag at 4/139 with 14 overs to spare, before they suffered a massive collapse to be all out for 157.

The South African innings could have been a lot worse after being just 8/91 half way through their 50 overs. The innings was salvaged by a ninth wicket partnership of 85 between Andrew Hall and Robin Peterson.

West Indies survive Kenyan challenge

Kenya gave West Indies a scare, before going down by 21 runs in their warm-up match in Jamaica. A Marlon Samuels century steered the West Indies to a total of 268. The Kenyan's looked a shot at causing an upset after a seventh wicket stand between Obuya and bowler Thomas Odoyo of 55. However they fell short, finishing on 7/247.

England down Bermuda in World Cup warm-up

England has thrashed Bermuda by 241 runs in the first of their World Cup warm up matches. England posted a respectable 8/286 after 120kg Bermuda spinner Dwayne Leverock took 2/32 including the scalp of Kevin Pietersen.

"I have been the leading wicket-taker for Bermuda for the last four years. The wicket gave me some turn and bounce so I used it to my advantage." said Leverock.

The 35-year-old left-armer, who was a 110 metre hurdler as a teenager, said he had slimmed down to about 19 stone, or 120kg for the World Cup.

Leverock's good work wasn't supported by the Bermuda batsmen, who were bowled out for just 45 after 22.2 overs, no doubt fueling debate over whether minor nations should be included in the World Cup.

Warm-ups begin at World Cup

With construction ongoing at stadiums and infrastructure across the nine scattered venues, the West Indies begin the dress rehearsal phase of the World Cup in one of four warm-up matches today.

The West Indies, winners of the first two cricket World Cups in 1975 and '79 in England and runner-up in '83, faces Kenya at Trelawny Stadium near Montego Bay.

No.1-ranked South Africa plays Cup debutante Ireland at Trinidad, England is against Bermuda at St. Vincent and 1996 champion Sri Lanka takes on Scotland at the 3Ws stadium in Barbados in today's other matches.

Australia, seeking an unprecedented third consecutive World Cup title, had a boost yesterday with all-rounder Andrew Symonds hitting a dozen cricket balls in a net practice.

Although Symonds will miss tomorrow's warm-up match against Zimbabwe at St. Vincent and is still unlikely to return to action at least until Australia's March 24 Group match against South Africa.

India also features in warm-ups tomorrow against Netherlands, when New Zealand plays Bangladesh at Barbados and Pakistan takes on Canada at Trinidad.

The 16-match warm-up stage finally finishes Friday and the tournament proper starts next Tuesday with West Indies against Pakistan at Sabina Park in Jamaica.

Despite the West Indies position as the leading limited-overs team of the 1970s and early 1980s, the Caribbean has had to wait until last among the major cricket markets to host cricket's biggest event.

And the pressure is on the local team, which won the 2004 Champions Trophy tournament but has otherwise been in decline since its domination in the 80s.

No host has ever won the World Cup final, with South Africa eliminated after the first round at the last edition four years ago.

The South Africans are back at No.1 now, helped by Australia's five-match losing stretch.

South Africa and Australia have both complained about practice facilities so far and are investigating alternatives.

Australia has few options for its lineup in the warm-ups, with Symonds and opener Matt Hayden (broken toe) unavailable with injuries and vice-captain Adam Gilchrist arriving late following the birth of his third child.

Australia has lost six of its seven matches since Symonds ruptured his right biceps and needed surgery early last month. - AP
