Marshall approved as replacement

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has approved New Zealand's application to replace injured batsman Lou Vincent with Hamish Marshall for the remainder of the Cricket World Cup.

Marshall will now take his place in the side after Vincent suffered a broken left lower ulna (wrist) earlier in the week when he was on the receiving end of a particularly lethal Shane Bond delivery during a recent team net session.

No arrest in Woolmer murder

Despite reports that someone had been arrested in relation to the Bob Woolmer murder Jamaican police say theres is no truth in the reports. "I don't know where that's come from. That's nonsense, as far as I'm concerned. There's actually no truth in that." said deputy commissioner Mark Shield.

"I can unequivocally dismiss that, unless someone's given themselves up in India and we don't know about it, but I think that's highly unlikely."

However, its been reveleaed that there were no signs of forced entry into the Pakistan coach's hotel room "That's one of the interesting facts of the case. There's no sign of any forced entry at all," Shields said.

"In fact, all of Bob's possessions, as far as we can see, were intact."

Shields said it was therefore "difficult to believe" Woolmer's killer or killers were complete strangers to him.

He said: "It's imperative that we keep an open mind, but I have to say at this stage it looks as if it may be somebody somehow linked to him because clearly he let somebody into his hotel room and it may be that he knew who that person was."

Shield also went on to say “It would take some force because Bob was a large man and, therefore, it would have taken some significant force to subdue him.”

He added: “We do not know how many people there were in the room.”

Woolmer death now being treated as 'suspicious'

Jamaica's deputy police commissioner Mark Shields has revealed the death of Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer is now being treated as 'suspicious'.

Shields released a statement which said:

"At the press conference earlier today we reported that the cause of death was inconclusive.

"Having met with the pathologist, other medical personnel and investigators there is now sufficient information to continue a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr Woolmer, which we are now treating as suspicious.

"We have already informed the Woolmer family of this development and we are also in close contact with the Pakistan team management, Cricket World Cup and ICC to ensure all parties are kept informed of the ongoing investigation."

Flintoff dropped as England vice-captain

England's Andrew Flintoff was sacked as World Cup vice-captain and dropped for their Group C game against Canada this morning after a late-night drinking session in St Lucia.

However, team management decided against sending the 29-year-old all-rounder home after the incident on Friday night following their six-wicket defeat by New Zealand.

British newspapers had reported that Flintoff had to be fished out of the sea after capsizing a pedal boat in the sea following a drinking session.

A statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said five other players had also been fined for breaching discipline.

It added that this was not the first time that Flintoff, considered one of the world's greatest all-rounders and a key figure in their famous 2005 Ashes win over Australia, had been involved in such an episode.

"Andrew Flintoff has been given warnings about his conduct and disciplined for previous incidents of this nature," England head coach Duncan Fletcher was quoted as saying in the statement.

"In light of this and due to the serious nature of the incident which he was involved in at the hotel on Friday night, we have decided to take further disciplinary action against him.

"Andrew has been made fully aware of the team management's concerns and the fact that the ECB considers this type of behaviour to be totally unacceptable.

"He will remain with the World Cup squad and be available for selection for our next match against Kenya.

"All players involved wish to express their sincere regret for the embarrassment caused to their team mates, the England supporters and the ECB."

Pakistan coach dies

Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer - a former England Test batsman - has died after being found unconscious in his hotel room in the West Indies.

The 58-year-old was discovered in his room at the Pegasus Hotel in Sabina Park on Sunday morning, and was immediately taken to the emergency department of a nearby hospital - but he did not recover.

A team spokesman said: "We saw him on Saturday night but having not seen him early on Sunday two of our officers went to his room and with the help of hotel staff entered. He was found unconscious there. It is too early to say whether he has suffered a heart attack. We are awaiting medical reports."

Gibbs day out

Herschelle Gibbs has bagged an international cricket first by hitting six sixes in an over as South Africa inflicted a 221-run defeat on Holland at the World Cup.

Gibbs savaged Daan van Bunge to help his team charge to a South African World Cup-record 3-353 at Warner Park, and Holland could respond with only 9-132 in the Group A match reduced to 40 overs each because of rain.

Lara satisfied with win

Here's what Brian Lara had to say following the West Indies opening World Cup win against Pakistan.

On the efforts of the team's young players:
"I think it was important they seized the moment. We said this was not a World Cup for the experienced players and we would be tapping on the shoulders of the younger players to win this World Cup."

On how well the side played:
"I think we played pretty well in the batting department. Marlon (Samuels) put us back in the game and Dwayne (Smith) at the end in his partnership with Corey (Collymore). We're happy with that."

"I was satisfied after the start we had and thought the guys played really well in the last 10 overs."

"The bowling was a very good team effort. We used just five bowlers and they all did very well."

And in regards to support from the home crowd:
"It was great to have the support we had (from the crowd) and our confidence will now be sky-high. We may have to come down a few levels over the next few days."
